Vanessa Lynn fondly referred to as the “Queen of the Twist,” is an Amazon bestselling writer and producer. Her unique brand of suspenseful, dramatic, and inspirational family-friendly productions has captivated audiences since 2006. Hailing from Detroit, she was surrounded by the arts from a young age, thanks to her mother, a well-known music teacher in the city. It was her mother who introduced her to classics like “Annie” and “The Wiz,” sparking a passion for storytelling in the young writer.
In the early 2000s, Vanessa penned and produced several popular gospel stage plays in metro Detroit. Live recordings of "Unequally Yoked," "Affairs," and "Boss Lady" each achieved national distribution from 2012-2013, including distribution inside over 700 Walmart stores. The comedy-suspense "Deranged" and musical "Church Girl" (contributing writer) toured select U.S. cities as well as Canada. "Church Girl" has also aired on the BET and Centric TV networks. Vanessa's first feature film, titled "Fakers," was released in 2020 on streaming platforms as a four-part mini-series. Ms. Lynn recorded the stage play "Enemy in My House" in May 2025 and the sold-out live performance will be available for audiences to view.
Additionally, a Houston-based non-profit commissioned Lynn to write a play for teenage girls entitled "Brown Skin Girl." This play has been performed nationwide in the states of Delaware, Texas, and South Carolina. Other works to Lynn's credit include "Soul Custody," "The Call," "When Men Pray" (co-writer), "I Need a Man," "Cycles," and numerous other shows. Lynn has also produced a series of fun interactive mystery dinner shows ("Murder at the Carver High Reunion," "Murder at the Family Reunion etc.) and has previously owned several event venues.
Lynn also delved into independent music. She formed and executive produced Nation of David, which released a gospel CD in 2007. In 2019, she formed a pre-teen girls' singing group, TL Girlz (True Love Girlz), and released a five-song EP, all of which she wrote (two songs, co-written). TL Girlz promoted positivity in adolescents, and the group focused on anti-bullying and teen suicide prevention. The TL Girlz had a feature on Detroit Fox 2 News ( a South African Broadcast, "Beautiful News," and several local Detroit radio stations, and performed at several school and community events. A PSA video for "Stop Think and Listen" was released and garnered thousands of views on Facebook and Instagram.
Lynn has been a guest judge for many talent auditions, competitions, and film and theater festivals. She also briefly served on the Atlanta Black Theater Festival board and has screened filmed stage plays for distribution. Her sometimes up-and-down experience in theater led Vanessa to start Urban Playwrights United in 2008, a national organization that held conferences across the U.S. for over a decade. She released the book "Beyond the Chitlin' Circuit, The Ultimate Urban Playwrights Guide" in 2013, an invaluable resource for producers and writers. Lynn has been a much-requested ghost-writer, writing consultant, and script doctor and has a list of clients from local independent to national artists. She has also conducted a number of writing classes and workshops and is a mentor for many book, theater, and film writers.
During her two decades in the arts, Vanessa Lynn has developed and supported the careers of many actors, writers, and producers. As she embarks on new pursuits, stay tuned for an upcoming limited series of live performances in 2025-2026, culminating in a twenty-year celebration.
